The availability of parts for the Paseo and Tercel has sorely lagged compared to other Toyota models (and worse- compared to other brands). Being part of the Toyota family- the Tercel and Paseo are wonderful cars, that many owners feel should be rewarded with upgrades.
The 89 Tercel we converted was the fifth vehicle of a computer consultant, an extra car that has served its purpose but was too good to get rid off. The goal was to maintain the stock look but upgrade the chassis to a higher performance level- just like upgrading computers, there are many changes you can do- but it all has to work together.
The tired engine was replaced with a 4EFTE- basically a turbocharged / twincam 16 valve version of the original 3E engine. Being of the same E engine series- the conversion was a drop-in deal. The conversion is straightforward- but you need all the parts. We actually started with just the basic engine, but had to import a lot of other parts. We used the factory 4EFTE EFI system. If we had started with a 4EFTE conversion package- complete engine, wiring harness, and ECU- it would have been a lot easier. (There are some other relays and sensors that will be needed depending on the car the engine is being installed in.)
Since this car was not an original EFI model the fuel delivery system had to be up-dated to a 90 and up model. The Tercel is a much simpler car than others and rewiring to accommodate the new engine and was also much simpler. The harness has to be modified to configure to left-hand drive.
The 4EFTE comes with a top mounted intercooler, but we opted for a more efficient front mount unit. We used an air to air HKS unit, that was originally made for the 22RTE pick-up. This also allowed us to maintain the stock look, instead of having to add a hood scoop. We retained the original automatic transmission and added a modified torque-converter- since turbos always work a little bit better with auto-shift. The axles were rebuilt at the same time.
The front brakes were updated to cross-drilled units and Repco pads / shoes all the way around. The suspension was upgraded with Tokico HPs with the stock springs, in keeping with the desired ultimate sleeper look.
Recaro N seats were the only other upgrade- when you think about it the seats are the only part of the car that actually touches your body. The car had an immediate different feel.
The installed engine is basically a stock as installed, but we have ready a built 5E block (with forged pistons) and a bigger turbo. With some slight ECU mods, this engine will produce 200HP!!!!
